As one voice for the student body, we feel compelled to address a growing concern within the Deerfield community: the need for greater accountability and transparency in the administration. In an era where bureaucracy often overshadows the voices of those it serves, it is imperative that institutions, especially educational ones such as Deerfield, prioritize the inclusion of student perspectives in decision-making processes.

At the heart of this call for change lies the growing disparity between the decision-makers and the students whom they serve. After all, how many of us have had the opportunity to engage in meaningful, face-to-face conversations with those at the helm of our school’s administration? How often has student input been relegated to mere checkboxes on mechanical surveys whose results we can’t even access? Are we any more than subjects and recipients of policy change? And, if we reconsider our institutions, could we become architects of our experience?

We advocate for a shift toward a more inclusive model of governance — one that actively seeks and values student perspectives. This entails not just token representation, but genuine opportunities for students to shape the policies and practices that impact their lives.

One way to achieve this is through the implementation of caucuses and referendums on key issues, such as the dress code and gender-inclusive housing. These mechanisms would provide a platform for open dialogue and deliberation, allowing students to voice their concerns directly to the administration. While such initiatives may be non-binding, they at least hold symbolic value in that they demonstrate a commitment to democratic principles and foster a culture of mutual respect and collaboration.

In addition, we call upon school leadership to seek out student feedback on a regular basis, rather than relying on sporadic surveys or superficial consultations with select groups of students. By establishing channels for ongoing, face-to-face communication and dialogue, we can bridge the gap between students and administrators, and perhaps foster a sense of shared ownership and accountability.

Ultimately, the strength of any educational institution lies in its ability to adapt and evolve in response to the needs of its students. By empowering students in the decision making process, we not only uphold Deerfield’s core values but also cultivate a culture of mutual respect and responsibility.
