Thanks to Anna Lu ’13, students can now volunteer down the street at Old Deerfield Nursery School from 8:30 am to 12:45 pm.

Students will lead small reading groups, participate in indoor and outdoor games, and supervise the youngsters. “It really gives our preschool students an additional opportunity to be social and display pride in the school and their knowledge base,” said Aimee Zeoli, a teacher at Old Deerfield Nursery. “I would love to see student volunteers develop an appreciation for the importance of early education,” Ms. Zeoli continued.

Lu sees the service opportunity as a way to ease Deerfield’s often-disputed ‘pace of life’ issue and said that helping others “might help lighten stress on students.” Head of the Community Service Board John Lee ’13 said this opportunity is “especially designed for those who have not been able to participate in service due to overlapping commitments to sports and extracurriculars.” There is no need for sign ups; students are welcome during morning free periods.
