Due to the cold weather, student morale sometimes drops during the winter. After a long winter week, many students are happy to journey to the Main School Building for a cup of hot cocoa and some delicious cookies.
Dr. Austin explained, “The purpose [of this tradition] has been to provide an opportunity during winter term for students to mingle and chat while enjoying [treats] in front of the MSB fireplace.” The warm and crackling fireplace provides a cozy atmosphere for students to quickly drop in for a snack or sit and talk with friends.
Former Head of School Margarita Curtis started the tradition during her time as Head of School. Unfortunately, Cookies and Cocoa was paused during the pandemic, only restarting this year. Dr. Austin expressed his excitement, saying, “I enjoy all of those features of Cookies and Cocoa,” referring to the chance to engage with students, and having something to look forward to on Friday afternoon.
Showcasing some wonderful aspects of the community, Cookies and Cocoa has benefitted Deerfield Academy since it began. Although it is a small tradition, it brings joy to many students during the Winter Term, as they can look forward to relaxing with friends and munching on delectable treats. Many students can agree with Dr. Austin when he said, “I think what [the students] enjoy most is gathering together to have a Friday end-of-week snack.”
