When Sabina Frosk ’24 took up volleyball her freshman year, she didn’t consider playing seriously during her highschool career. But after her hard work led to success her senior year in Texas, she decided to pursue a postgraduate year at Deerfield. Now, she is an on-court leader for the Deerfield Girls Varsity Volleyball team, playing the position of libero (a back-row player specializing in defense and passing).
Prior to attending Deerfield, Frosk broke her high school record in Texas for the most number of digs (saves) in a season (780), and was named District 6-6A’s Defensive Player of the Year in her senior year. She said she decided to do a postgraduate year so that she would have time to enjoy the sport for a year longer and consider a college athletic career.
While growing up, Frosk played different sports. including tennis, softball, lacrosse and basketball. She also explained that her parents and siblings, all being athletes, created a family environment that nurtured her sporting career.
Frosk cited her father as her main supporter. “My dad has been the biggest influence on my volleyball career,” she said. “He’s the one who even found out I was going to break the record from high school. I didn’t even know.”
Before the school year started, Frosk connected with the two Girls Varsity Volleyball captains Evie Mokarow ’24 and Emily Rice ’24. Discussing Frosk’s importance to the team, Mokarow said, “Sabina really steps into her role and takes the initiative on defense. We rely
on her in that way.”
Frosk says that Mokarow and Rice have been extremely helpful in teaching her to navigate and adjust to life at a boarding school. The volleyball team also got together during the preseason which helped Frosk to get to know her teammates beforehand. “It’s been fun. I’ve learned a lot already,” she said.
Frosk said that she appreciates the team’s energy and drive. “I like the team atmosphere and the competitiveness. I’m very competitive. I don’t like to lose,” she said. Nevertheless, she recognized that setbacks are integral in sports, saying “There’s going to be hard times but you’re going to learn so much from them and get so far because of them.”
She likes to quote her motto: everything happens for a reason. “I don’t beat myself up because of it,” she said. “If we lose a game, it happened because we’re going to get to where we need to be. We’re going to learn from it. It happened for a reason.”
This year, the athletes on the Deerfield Girls Varsity Volleyball team will attempt to defend Deerfield’s title as the NEPSAC Class A Champion after winning first place for two consecutive years.
