1. Holiday
This merry and lighthearted theme will ensure that the stands are full of festive cheer and joyous unity among spectators and athletes under the spirit of Father Christmas. However, this theme is only effective during the holiday season (particularly during Turkey Term), but its powerful effect of unity among spectators is undeniable.
2. Green out
Bleed green while looking stylish at the same time. The theme is reasonably available to the typical Deerfield student, and it carries the additional benefit of being discreetly intimidating to the opposition (unless the competition is Berkshire). It also allows us to project the unbreakable school spirit and pride that Deerfield holds dear. This theme is sure to bolster the confidence and morale of the Deerfield athletes, even if it may be a bit cliché.
3. PJ’s
Sleep in, kick back, and relax! Even if you slept through your Wednesday morning alarm, skipped three periods and school meeting, you could still make that 2:00 p.m. volleyball game! But be careful if it’s cold outside as your pajamas are probably less than ideal for braving the chilly weather, regardless of how comfortable they might be.
4. Black-out
Cover the stands with darkness and embrace the formidable atmosphere and team spirit without having to find an extravagant-looking costume. The theme is one of the easier ones to take part in as most students already have the clothing needed to participate. You may even find yourself participating in blackout unknowingly at some point! Even though black-out can have the same problem as white-out (the problem of everyone forgetting to participate), black-out edges out white-out because black clothes go well with almost anything. All around, black out is a simple yet amazing theme that really proves that less is more.
5. White-out
The counterpart of black-out, white-out envelops the bleachers in a blanket of white. Oftentimes, students put little to no effort into this theme even though it requires less consideration than some of the other ones. However, if the spectators do manage to pitch in and dress up fully, white out becomes an appealing theme with a simple yet powerful effect.
6. Jerseys
Have you ever wanted to support your favorite sports team and Deerfield Academy simultaneously? This two for one theme combines the best of both worlds and adds a tasteful touch to your style. Wearing a jersey also lets you embody the spirit and essence of a true sports fan.
7. Beach
Button up a Hawaiian shirt and wear a pair of sunglasses. You can almost hear the sound of waves crashing on the shore, the warm sand on your back, and the salty scent of the sea, even if you’re in the chilly indoor hockey rink in the middle of January. This idyllic theme is always a welcoming sight. The theme brings tropical summer vibes to Deerfield and a rowdy crowd to cheer on the Big Green. Although this theme creates the exciting feeling of going on vacation, sadly the beach is not included.
8. Disco
Take a trip back to the ’80s and show how hip you are! Hopefully, you bought some disco-themed clothes from Salvation Army in Turners Falls earlier in the fall because finding retro-themed clothes in person can be tricky. Hours of online shopping is usually the more painful but more successful route. Unfortunately, the careful planning and commitment required to participate in dressing up and finding a proper outfit places Disco at the bottom of our list.
